Where do we stand on the ‘tariff Laffer curve’?

Let’s face it, at the moment, Donald Trump is winning on all fronts. His trade tariff announcements allow him to cast himself in a favourable light, as a leader who makes his trading partners bend to his will and often receives thanks in return. The US economy is holding up fairly well, and the stock markets are at record highs. If only Jerome Powell would lower interest rates, everything would be even better. To date, Trump has set tariffs high enough to generate significant customs revenues, but not so high as to cause irreparable damage to business conditions or push other countries into a full-blown tariff escalation. Is this luck or genius?
