Why is the Fed still buying assets?
How quickly things can change! In March, the FOMC was confronted with a sharp rise in long-term interest rates, reflecting the upward shift in inflation expectations. It had to calm the situation down, i.e. and above all avoid talk about tapering. The FOMC meets next week: although inflation has risen much more than expected, long rates have… fallen. The Fed continues to buy assets, providing liquidity with one hand and withdrawing it with the other via its reverse repo facility....
