In January, the government set a target for the budget deficit of 4.4% of GDP. In March, due to the 2023 deficit unexpectedly overshooting, the target was increased to 5.1%. Six months later, the Finance Ministry announced that tax revenues were lower than anticipated despite fairly decent GDP growth and that local authorities had opened the spending taps with a view to the elections in 2026.
