A Troubling Picture on U.S. Fiscal Issues

Following the failure of the GOP’s health care reform efforts attention may now turn to the potential for a government shutdown as the Continuing Resolution that provides budgetary authority for discretionary government spending expires on April 28. These short-term budget problems are troubling but last week’s report on the Long-Term Budget Outlook from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) points to far greater fiscal challenges down the road. The medium- and longer-term fiscal trends reported by the CBO might make fiscal conservatives apprehensive about supporting changes to the tax code that further boosts budgets deficits. The lack of a specific tax reform plan and uncertainties over the budget could lead to less enthusiasm toward risk assets in the coming months.
