US Trade Data More of a Focus in Era of Trump

The trade data are more likely to be looked at in political rather than economic terms in the next year. A trade deficit is erroneously associated with a drag on economic activity or, more colorfully, stealing our jobs and is seen as the product of currency manipulation. This is not the place for a critique of outdated Mercantilist economics, which sadly is experiencing a renaissance in certain circles, but it is the place to make a few observations.
