MARKETS YESTERDAY AND TODAY

Macro data kills the rally’s momentum
Profit taking in most European stock markets following the poor macro data released. In the Euro Stoxx, Energy and Travel & Leisure fell the most, with Pharma and Financial Services the best relative performers. On the macro side, in the euro zone April’s final services PMI was raised slightly to 12, which would be consistent with a contraction of around -11% in the GDP YoY, whereas March’s retail sales fell more than expected. The European Commission expects the euro zone GDP to fall -7.7% and the Spanish GDP would fall -9.4% (vs. -8.0% from IMF), with unemployment rising to 18.9%. In Germany, factory orders fell more than expected. In Spain, the services PMI slowed more than expected to 9.2 vs. the previous 26.7, which would be consistent with a -14% drop in GDP, and the Govt. has managed to extend the state of alarm to 23 May. In the US, April’s ADP private employment fell less than expected. In China, April’s exports rose unexpectedly, while imports fell more than expected and the Caixin services PMI rose less than expected in April. In US business results, General Motors, T-Mobile and Discovery beat expectations, Global Payments, West Management and KKR were in line and Wendy’s released worse earnings than expected.
What we expect for today
We can expect mixed results at the opening bell. Currently, S&P futures are up +0.75% (the S&P 500 ended down -1.00% vs. its price at the closing bell in Europe). Volatility in the US rose (VIX 34.12%). Asian markets are trading with mixed results (Japan +0.22% and Hong Kong -0.76%).
Today in Germany and France we will learn March’s industrial output, in the UK the BoE will meet, in Mexico April’s inflation and in the US weekly jobless claims and unit labour cost for 1Q’20. In US business results, Allergan, Scientific Games, Hilton and Booking, among others, will release their earnings. Debt auctions: Spain (€ 7.5 Bn in bonds due 2023, 2025, 2027, I/L 2033 and 2050) and France (€ 11.5 Bn in bonds due 2028, 2029, 2050 and 2060).
