IBERIAN DAILY 10 OCTOBER (ANÁLISIS BANCO SABADELL)

NEWS SUMMARY: CELLNEX, ECOENER, ELECTRICITY SECTOR, IBERDROLA, MERLIN PROPERTIES, NATURGY.

US unemployment taints the strong week
It was a volatile week with gains of around +2.0% on both sides of the Atlantic despite the strength of the US job data that led to corrections last Friday. In the Euro STOXX, most sectors closed the week with gains, led by Energy and Technology, vs. the worse relative performance from Real Estate and Household Goods. On the macro side, in the US non-farm job creation came in slightly better than expected whereas September’s unemployment rate fell unexpectedly, and although wage gains slowed their pace more than expected, the market interpreted that the Fed will continue its aggressive rate hike programme. In this regard, J. Williams suggested that rates should be raised up to 4.5% although the pace will depend on the economic performance. In China, Caixin services PMI dropped more than expected, standing below 50. On another note, Covid-19 cases climbed after a holiday week (golden week). On the geopolitical side, the Biden administration restricted access to microchips used in artificial intelligence and supercomputation manufactured outside China for 28 Chinese companies and implemented stricter rules for the sale of semiconductors.
What we expect for today
European stock markets would open with drops >-1%, with the technology sector dragged down by the measures implemented by Biden. Currently, S&P futures are down -0.3% (the S&P 500 ended -0.65% lower vs. the European closing bell). Volatility in the US increased (VIX 31.36). Asian markets are falling (China’s CSI 300 -1% and Japan’s Nikkei -0.7%).
Today in the euro zone we will learn October’s Sentix Investor Confidence index. Debt auctions: Germany (€ 5 Bn in 3M and 9M t-bills).
