MARKETS YESTERDAY AND TODAY

A week of Central Banks in the limelight
The week was marked by the Central Bank meetings, with a more hawkish message than expected and with concerns about the performance of the Omicron variant. In this regard, the Netherlands imposed a lockdown again, Austria is only allowing the entry of vaccinated citizens or those that faced Covid, the UK could adopt stricter measures in view of the Christmas, Germany has added new restrictions to travellers coming from the UK (they could only travel if they are German citizens or travellers in transit with a mandatory 14-day quarantine), France and Denmark (with a 5-day mandatory quarantine), in Italy the regions are imposing different restrictions, in Ireland there are opening hour restrictions in hotels and restaurants and the US foresees an increase in hospital pressure. With all this in mind, peripheral markets continued to perform poorly, with the IBEX 35 ending the week with losses of around -0.5% (testing the reference of 8,300 points), the DAX also closing around -0.5% lower and the Euro STOXX 50 falling -0.8%. Within the Euro STOXX, the best-performing sectors last week were Basic Materials and Food, whereas Autos and Retail ended with the worst relative performance. On the macro side, in the UK November’s retail sales rose more than expected. In Germany, December’s IFO moderated more than expected given the disappointment in the expectations component, suggesting 2.4% GDP growth in the 4Q’21 vs. 2.3% expected by the consensus. In the euro zone November’s final inflation figure confirmed the preliminary 4.9% data while the core data remained at 2.6%. In Spain, the CB warned that the economic recovery will be slower than in the rest of the EU. In the US, the Senator J. Manchin changed his voting intention unexpectedly on Biden stimulus programme, questioning the approval of the US$ 1.8 Trillion Build Back Better, which would halt growth expectations for 2022. In China, banks cut 1-year loan rates for the first time in the past 20 months. In Turkey, R. Erdogan promised net rate cuts, with the Lira returning to lows.
What we expect for today
European stock markets would open with corrections, and with the worse performance of sectors linked to the services industry due to fears about restrictions as a result of new Covid cases and the disappointment surrounding the approval of new fiscal stimulus in the US. Currently, S&P futures are down -1.1% (the S&P 500 ended -0.28% lower yesterday vs. its level at the European closing bell). Volatility in the US rose (VIX 21.57). Asian markets are sliding (China’s CSI 300 -1.3% and Japan’s Nikkei -2.1%).
Today there are no relevant macro releases or debt auctions.

COMPANY NEWS

MERLIN PROPERTIES, BUY
According to the press, Santander (22% MRL) would have proposed the dismissal of Ismael Clemente, CEO and founder of the REIT, at the Board meeting held last week although the measure did not obtain the sufficient support, as Santander only has 3 seats out of the total 13, with many of the Board members being independent. However, according to the same sources, Ismael Clemente could voluntarily abandon the company in view of the continued disputes with the non-executive chairman appointed by Santander, Javier García Carranza, who would have limited his powers and they not share a good relationship. We believe that the departure of Ismael Clemente and his team would be negative news for MRL, as he is recognized by the sector and the market after his excellent job in the REIT. With this in mind, since Santander does not have sufficient weight in the Board, which is dividend, we believe that the departure of Clemente is not evident.
