MARKETS YESTERDAY AND TODAY

Little movement, but with slight drops
European markets saw profit taking in a session marked by the corrections in crude oil and the movement in debt curves. In the Euro Stoxx the best-performing sectors were Telecoms and Personal Household Goods vs. the drops in Autos and Retail, which were the worst performers. On the macro side, in Germany November’s unemployment rate fell sharply and unexpectedly. In Spain, mortgage signings had their worst September performance in 5 years after the new real estate credit law came into effect. By contrast, the BoS stated that there is not a clear downturn in the economy according to Social Security data. In the euro zone, November’s inflation data rose more than expected (1.0% general and 1.3% core), whereas the unemployment rate fell by -0.1% in October, in line with expectations. In the ECB, Schnabel justified the measures taken in September with the weak inflation, seeing negative rates as a positive. In the UK, PM Boris Johnson asked Trump not to get involved in the country’s elections. In China, the Caixin manufacturing PMI increased to 50.2 in November vs. 49.3 in October (Caixin to 51.8 vs. 51.7 previously), and the Services PMI increased to 54.4 from 52.8. In Japan, November’s manufacturing PMI climbed to 48.9 vs. 48.6 previously, whereas in India, it recovered to 51.2 vs. 50.6 previously.
What we expect for today
European markets would open with gains close to +0.2% along with the recovery of Brent crude prices, awaiting the OPEC meeting and after Irak confirmed that it will consider cuts to production. We would see drops in stocks from the luxury industry (LVMH, Kering) due to the poor macro data in Hong Kong (impact from the protests). Currently, S&P futures are up +0.20% (the S&P 500 was down -0.17% vs. its price at the closing bell in Europe). Volatility in the US rose (VIX 12.62%). The Asian markets that are open are rising (Hong Kong +0.40% and Japan +1.01%).
Today in the euro zone we will learn November’s manufacturing PMI and Lagarde will appear before the European Parliament, in the UK November’s manufacturing PMI and in the US November’s manufacturing ISM. Debt auctions: Netherlands (€ 2 Bn in 6M t-bills) and France (€ 4.8 Bn in 3M, 6M and 12M t-bills).
