Regional Plantation - Demand contraction likely to be more severe

We lower our CPO price assumption for 2020 to RM2,200/tonne from RM2,400/tonne to factor in more severe demand impact from the COVID-19 pandemic. We also revise down production growth for 2020 to factor in some operational disruption during the lockdown and lower yield from the earlier dry weather in Malaysia. 2Q20 is likely to be the weakest quarter for CPO prices this year and recovery could come gradually towards 3Q20 as demand resumes. Maintain MARKET WEIGHT.

The recent CPO price correction was attributed to negative sentiment arising from the COVID-19 outbreak and a slump in crude oil prices which are likely to lower global demand for palm oil. In our view, this will trim investorsâ€™ interest and lead to lower PE valuations. We have cut our demand growth estimate to +0.5% yoy from +2% yoy. Despite this adjustment, stock-to-usage ratio would still be lower yoy and supports our projection of higher ASPs in 2020. Downgrade to MARKET WEIGHT.
