Fireside Chat Highlights Company's Focus on Quality Projects and Attractive Returns

We recently hosted Base Carbon CEO Michael Costa for a fireside chat, which included a discussion of the company’s approach to investing in the voluntary carbon markets, its focus on selecting quality projects and partners, and its focus on risk analysis and portfolio management. A replay of the event is available here and the full transcript is included in this report. Base Carbon is investing in projects that create substantial local benefits as well as strong investment returns. On the call, Costa explained how the company is focused on projects that create local benefits, such as reducing cooking emissions through cleaner burning cookstoves, easy access to clean drinking water, and helping farmers plant producing trees on their degraded lands. At the same time, the company is able to make attractive returns through selling credits that are verifiably delivering local results. Extensive and in-depth due diligence processes to find quality projects and partnerships. Base Carbon employs a rigorous due diligence process that includes looking at a wide number of projects and doing deep dives in each before committing its capital. The company seeks local partners with established track records of working in those types of projects and then ensures potential risks of the project and the verification of the benefits are known. Project structure offers a high degree of knowability that helps offset risk. On the call, Costa explained that a significant amount of the material risks in its projects are known upfront, leaving little variability in costs that can affect the overall expected value of the project. This is in contrast to many other types of upstream investments, such as resource plays, where much of the project capital is expended in proving the reserves or spent around the cost of producing the asset. Recently announced partnership with STX Group offers the potential to scale the market for carbon removals. Costa explained how the partnership brings together STX’s project development experience and knowledge of the downstream side of the carbon marketplace with Base Carbon’s existing investment platform and investment team. The two companies have the opportunity to help grow the market for carbon removal and at the same time diversify and expand the opportunities for Base Carbon to deploy its capital.
