Fireside Chat with CEO James Colquhoun at WTR's Consumer Products Virtual Investor Conference

We conducted a broad discussion with CEO James Colquhoun, including a review of the Gaia story, at WTR’s Consumer Products Virtual Investor Conference on June 5, 2024. This report contains a transcript of the conversation, which can be accessed on demand. Gaia is different than other SVOD operators. The company doesn’t provide exclusively entertainment, but rather is a community of people on an intellectual and spiritual discovery journey. This has a wide range of implications, ranging from member acquisition, content production, member attrition, and library life (to name the most important). Member acquisition. People join Gaia not because they are looking for an additional source of entertainment, but typically because they are experiencing a major life-changing event such as a personal loss. Gaia does not really compete with other SVOD providers to grow, rather it finds new members as they experience these life changing events. Content production. Gaia is able to produce the bulk of its content at its Boulder, Colorado campus, which allows the company to produce content at much lower production costs than virtually any other digital content producer. Member attrition. Gaia creates a community feel for its members and typically members develop a sense of belonging and loyalty the longer they are part of the Gaia community. This is unlike other SVOD producers who offer primarily entertainment and whose success depends on having the latest hit shows in their lineups. Library life. Because of its nature, Gaia’s content does not age to the same extent as entertainment-focused content. For example, a new Gaia member interested in metaphysics will still be very interested in content covering that topic regardless of the age of the content. The company has experienced strong growth over the last few quarters. This is the result of member growth and a disciplined effort to raise ARPU via various initiatives, including price raises, a renewed focus on premium memberships, and the rollout of the Gaia Marketplace. In addition, the company is incentivizing members to subscribe to annual memberships (rather than monthly), which provides greater revenue stability. Strong growth in foreign language members (Spanish, French, and German). Most of the company’s English language titles can be dubbed and offered to this new and growing member base. Non-English language is currently 35% of the company’s revenue. Management believes it can grow to 50% of overall revenues within three to five years. AI is helping the business in several key areas, most importantly dubbing (significant cost savings) and better predictive content search. The business model has very attractive features, mainly due to the recurring nature of revenues and the significant operating leverage associated with digital content (fixed cost of content production and therefore, limited incremental costs associated with incremental revenues).
