4Q23 Results: Advancing Li-Metal Commercialization in the Automotive Sector with Enhanced Safety

During 2023, the company took significant steps toward utilizing AI in the development of future electrolytes. SES’ objective is to create a roadmap for the next iterations of Li-Metal technology. SES highlighted that practical safety and manufacturability as the key milestones for entering into B-sample development. Additionally, the data and test results led to improvements in the Avatar AI model. Under practical safety testing, safety was achieved without compromising on cell performance and energy density, by focusing on cell design and engineering while minimizing changes in material chemistry. For this, the company triggered thermal runaway tests on the 50Ah and 100Ah automotive A-sample cells. These cell design and engineering improvements are expected to be incorporated into B-sample cells. With respect to manufacturability, the company demonstrated that it could manufacture large automotive Li-Metal cells (50Ah to 100Ah) at pilot scale last year by operating three A-sample lines. This was driven mainly by moving the lithium anode production in-house giving greater control over efficiency while resolving the issues. The test results, including design and manufacturing, were useful in the development of the Avatar AI model, which is a health monitoring and incident prediction model. The Avatar AI model’s accuracy improved quickly, driven by the increase in the number of cells and quality control checkpoints per cell. The company saw a significant rise in the production of large automotive cells, from below 1,000 per year in 2022 to approximately 1,000 per month by the end of 2023 in one line alone. Moreover, the production quality control plan increased from less than 300 checkpoints per cell at the start of 2023 to more than 600 checkpoints per cell by the end of the previous year. In 2024, the company will focus on advancing the commercialization of Li-Metal in the automotive sector. The company also has an EV B-sample JDA that will be a priority in 2024. By utilizing this advanced AI model, the company aims to minimize battery-related incidents and their associated costs.
