Greece: A fresh comeback

We believe that the Greek equity market has good chances of entering a bull cycle, after a long, 10-year period of huge volatility and poor returns. Our optimism is due to: 1) the ambitious plan to grow and transition the economy, aided by the EU recovery funds and the post pandemic uplift in tourism; 2) a stable political environment, with a market-friendly government and a good lead in the opinion polls; 3) a new era for the banking sector, with clean and liquid balance sheets, an increasing appetite for new lending, good capital buffers and a ROE that could come close to the cost of equity; and 4) interesting stories in the non-financials space, with solid selective BUYs in both the large and mid-cap spaces. Our best picks from the banks are Alpha and NBG. From the non-financials, we prefer OPAP, Terna Energy and Motor Oil Hellas.
