Greece: what is desirous, in spite of the virus

Greece recorded a solid year in 2021, with a strong GDP recovery of >7%, one of the best in the Eurozone; the approval of a EUR 31bn package from the EU recovery funds, accounting for 17% of the GDP, the highest in the EU; stable politics, with the current market-friendly government maintaining a large lead in the opinion polls; and the successful transformation of the banking sector, with the NPE ratio now approaching single-digit levels). Although these great fundamentals did not result in an outperformance by the Greek equity market in 2021, we maintain our optimism for 2022E, on the back of: a broad-based macro recovery (GDP growth of >4%); the improvement in corporate profitability; the revival of the banking sector (high single-digit ROTEs within reach); and attractive valuations (market cap to GDP still at historic lows). Our top picks are National Bank (NBG), OPAP, GEK Terna and Motor Oil Hellas (MOH).
