EME Macro/Strategy: macro all-in-one (5-11 June)

In this weekly, we present our insights from the London Emerging Europe and Central Asia conference, held last week. Separately, last week’s data releases confirmed that economic activity is losing steam across our coverage, with varying underlying drivers; however, as inflationary pressures remain strong and rates high, pressure is mounting on governments to put credible fiscal consolidation plans in place. In other news, Turkey looks set for a period of monetary and fiscal consolidation, with new leadership in both the monetary and fiscal authorities. In Greece, the 1Q23 GDP print was released, implying an inventory-led slowdown, but we remain constructive on a strong tourism season ahead. Economic developments in Czechia suggest that the MPC will find it hard to gather sufficient support for a hike on 21 June. On the other hand, the data in Iceland have confirmed that further forceful tightening is in the pipeline (as we noted in our flash note).
