EME Strategy: MSCI confirms inclusion of Kuwait in MSCI EM in 2020

Yesterday (18 December), after the market closed, the MSCI confirmed the inclusion of Kuwait in the MSCI EM index along with the May 2020 Semi-Annual Index Review (SAIR). Moreover, the index provider extended the consultations over the possible downgrade of Argentina from the MSCI EM by June 2020. We see the announcement on Kuwait’s upgrade as positive for Romania and Kazakhstan, as it should result in USD 17m and USD 6m of passive inflows into the markets, respectively, on our numbers. Moreover, Romania’s weight in the MSCI Frontier Markets 100 index (based on the country’s weights in the ETF tracking the index) should expand from the current c.8% to c.12%, according to our calculations.
