PM Sobotka to submit the resignation of his government

Yesterday (2 May), Czech PM Sobotka announced that he will submit his government’s resignation later this week. With the elections due in October, this unexpected move heralds an abrupt start to the election campaign, marking an escalation of the conflict with the Finance Minister, Mr. Babis. Babis is the leader of the ANO party, a junior partner in the coalition. In recent opinion polls, ANO is leading with a significant margin vs. Sobotka’s Social Democrats. Explaining the decision, the PM noted the questionable business practices of Mr. Babis, for which he has failed to provide an acceptable explanation. These include potential tax evasion and the unexplained origin of his wealth.
