The Rear-View Mirror – CEE markets: New Polish Prime Minister appointed in December

Market performance –Turkish index the regional top performer in December.
The MSCI EME gained +3.7% mom in EUR terms in December. The largest rate of return for December was realised by the Turkish ISE30 (+13.9% mom), followed by the Athens Stock Exchange index (+8.4% mom), the Polish WIG20 (+2.9%), the Hungarian BUX (+2.6%), the Czech PX index (+1.6% mom) and the Russian MIXEX (+0.8% mom), while the Romanian BET index lost 1%.
Only utilities in negative territory for December. Industrials was the top-performing sector in December (+14.1% mom), followed by consumer discretionary (+11.1%), materials (5.8%), consumer staples (+5%), financials (+4.3%), telecoms (+3.3%), energy (+1.1%) and healthcare (+0.2%). Utilities was the only sector to end December with a negative performance, -2.2% mom.
Volumes – liquidity rose significantly in Athens in December. The largest mom growth in liquidity was reported in Athens, with the average daily traded value rising 40% mom, to USD 83m, while a smaller improvement was seen in Bucharest (+23% mom to USD 10m). On the other hand, Prague remained in negative territory in December, losing 9% (USD 21m), while Warsaw’s liquidity contracted by 14% (USD 242m). Budapest and Turkey also reported average daily liquidity declines, of 27% and 22%, respectively.
Macro – Poland’s PMI at a three year-high. According to the data released by Markit, Poland’s PMI rose from 54.2 in November to 55.0 in December, marking the highest level since early-2015. At the same time, the Czech PMI increased for the fourth consecutive month, to 59.8 in December. The Greek indicator also continued to grow, reaching 53.1 in December, from the 52.2 reported in November. The Turkish indicator rose by 2.0 to 54.9, the highest level since August. On the other hand, the Russian PMI suffered from a drop of 0.3 to 56.0 in December.
Politics – government reshuffle in Poland – Mateusz Morawiecki becomes new Prime Minister. The new Polish government under Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki was sworn in on 11 December. Compared to the previous cabinet, there are only two changes: Mateusz Morawiecki as Prime Minister, but keeping the posts of both Finance Minister and Development Minister; and Beata Szydlo appointed as deputy Prime Minister. Mr. Morawiecki has declared there will be no changes in economic policy compared to the previous government, and the focus of his cabinet will be on both economic growth and social issues.
