WOOD Flash – Greece macro: elections on Sunday – all you need to know

Greece is heading for general elections on Sunday (7 July). Following the strong win by New Democracy in the EU parliamentary elections, it is expected that the current opposition party will form a new government, with a comfortable absolute majority in parliament. This should be positive news for the market, in our view. Although we would not anticipate a huge shift in policy change if New Democracy comes to power, we would expect a more market-friendly government, with a focus on reducing taxation, increasing foreign investments and completing the privatisation programme. On the negative side, if New Democracy is not able to win an absolute majority and needs to seek a coalition partner, we could see some sort of pullback in the market until things become clear.
