WOOD Flash – Poland macro: MPC extends the pause

Yesterday (10 May), the Monetary Council decided to keep the reference rate unchanged, at 6.75%, as expected, and maintained a dovish tone, implying that the tightening cycle has been completed. The economic data as of April suggest that domestic activity has likely turned for the better, but inflation remains high, with a return to the 2.5% target not in sight in the coming two years. Despite the government’s efforts to resolve the sticking points with the Commission, we believe that it is unlikely to see recovery funds being unlocked ahead of the elections this autumn. The incumbent PiS party is leading the polls in the run up to the parliamentary elections this autumn, and we believe that the next government is likely to be led by a PiS coalition, on the margin.
