WOOD Flash - Romania macro: another PM candidate heading for a broad coalition

President Iohannis has appointed Nicolae Ciuca, former Defence Minister and military general, as the new Prime Minister. Ciuca will now attempt to form a coalition and, according to the press, he should have the support of PNL and probably PSD. Statements released to the press indicate that the position of UMDR is plausible in the new government, but with some reservations, while both key figures of USR-PLUS have stated clearly that they will remain in opposition. After a month of political stalemate, we believe that Ciuca is in a position to form a functioning government that, for a fairly short period of time, should be able to lead the country through the challenges posed by COVID and the energy crisis, as well as submitting the 2022E budget.
