WOOD Flash – Romania politics: first step towards early elections

The PNL government announced yesterday (16 January) that it is assuming responsibility for changing the electoral law, so that mayors are elected in two rounds, vs. the current first-past-the-post system (whereby the candidate with the largest number of votes, not necessarily a majority, wins). Immediately, PSD announced that it would trigger a vote of no confidence, which would be likely to take place in early-February; we believe this is likely to be passed, with the support of other parties.
