WOOD Flash – Türkiye macro: assessment of recent political events

Yesterday (19 March), Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul and the presumptive nominee of the CHP (Republican People's Party) for the presidential candidate ahead of the 2028 elections, was taken into detention, under the accusation of corruption and suspected cooperation with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, by allegedly forming an alliance with a Kurdish umbrella organisation for the Istanbul municipal elections. His detention took place together with another 100 people also being investigated, according to the local press.
