Games Workshop Group’s (GAW’s) H125 trading update suggests the company enjoyed a strong Q225 in both its core business (due to the launch of the fourth edition of Age of Sigmar midway through Q125) and licensing (due to the success of the Space Marine 2 video game). These are impressive in the context of the tough comparative from the prior year’s launch of the new edition of Warhammer 40K (40K) and the currency headwinds in the early part of H125. We upgrade our profit estimates for FY25 (by 7...
Games Workshop Group (GAW) is the global leader for tabletop miniature gaming, which has enjoyed impressive growth, with core revenue and total operating profit CAGRs of 17% and 19%, respectively, since FY15. A combination of improved product innovation, engagement with customers, geographic expansion of its distribution and licensing its intellectual property (IP) to third parties have driven its growth. Its vertical integration and control of its IP contribute to enviable returns on capital of...
Games Workshop Group (GAW) enjoyed a signature record year in FY24 with the launch of the 10th edition of its largest intellectual property (IP), Warhammer 40K, and strong growth in licensing income. Looking to FY25, management has an ambitious plan for growth. However, it also highlights the challenge of generating year-on-year growth given: 1) 40K is larger than Age of Sigmar (AoS), the fourth edition of which has been launched, and 2) the tough comparative for licensing income, which has a hi...
Games Workshop Group’s FY24 trading update provided a nice surprise on the revenue side, broadly equally split between core and licensing, and an even nicer surprise for PBT, suggesting an improvement in gross margin. We have upgraded our FY24 estimates to be consistent with the indicated figures and marginally increase our estimates for FY25, which reverts to a 52-week period accounting period.

Games Workshop Group has reported that trading for the three months to the end of February 2024 is in line with expectations. The fourth dividend of the year has been declared at 105p/share, which takes the year-to-date total to 420p/share, marginally ahead of the 415p/share declared in FY23 at a similar stage. The declared dividend compares with our prior estimate of 425p/share, and we have therefore nudged our estimate down to be consistent with the amounts declared.
Games Workshop Group’s (GAW’s) H124 results demonstrated the strong underlying revenue growth and higher profitability in its core activities that should be expected with the launch of a new edition of its main intellectual property (IP), Warhammer 40K. The share price has drifted down over the last six months, bringing the prospective P/E multiples for FY24 and FY25 of 23.3x and 22.4x back to more recent average multiples.
Games Workshop Group (GAW) has signed an agreement with Amazon Content Services, a subsidiary of Amazon.com, to prospectively develop GAW’s intellectual property (IP) into film and television content and to grant associated merchandising rights, initially focused on the Warhammer 40k universe. The partnership follows the announcement in December 2022 when management said an agreement had been reached in principle. Although the content will mainly be focused on GAW’s Warhammer 40k, Amazon has the...
Games Workshop Group’s (GAW’s) H124 trading update indicated a robust start to the year in line with management’s expectations. The launch of the new edition of Warhammer 40k in Q1 helped to boost core year-on-year revenue growth in the first half by an expected 11% to no less than £235m (H123: £212.3m). Licensing revenue is expected at £12m (H123: £14.3m), taking total group revenue to c £247m (H123: £227m). There was an implied slowdown in core revenue growth in Q2 versus Q1, although this is ...
Games Workshop Group (GAW) enjoyed another record year of revenue and profit growth in FY23 despite the more challenging macroeconomic backdrop and economy-wide cost pressures. Underlying volume growth is testimony to the appeal of the IP to its hobbyists. GAW entered FY24 with strong revenue momentum, implying that the June 2023 release of Leviathan, the 10th edition of its most significant property, Warhammer 40K, has boosted growth in Q124. Easing cost pressures should be supportive of underl...
Games Workshop Group’s (GAW’s) FY23 trading update indicates an improvement in underlying trading in the latter months of the period and the expected easing of cost pressures. The strength of the improvement is evident in the fact that FY23 PBT is greater than both our previous FY23 and FY24 estimates. We upgrade our FY24 PBT estimates by c 4%, which incorporates an underlying upgrade offset by a new foreign exchange headwind.
Games Workshop Group’s (GAW’s) update highlights that Q323 trading to the end of February 2023 is in line with expectations. In addition, a further dividend of £1.20 per share has been declared, taking the year-to-date total to £4.15 per share, a very healthy current yield of 4.6%, well ahead of FY22’s £2.35 per share. Separately, this week the company announced that the tenth edition of Warhammer 40,000 will be released in the summer of 2023.
Games Workshop Group’s (GAW’s) record H123 results included strong revenue recovery in Retail as COVID-19 restrictions eased, foreign exchange gains, offset by some negative effects, specifically from Russia and China, and flat sales in the key North American market. The lower reported profit reflects the well-known external cost pressures and investment to support future revenue growth, partially offset by good cost control. Our profit estimates are unchanged but we increase our dividend estima...
Games Workshop’s (GAW’s) H123 trading update indicates an encouraging start to the year, with reported revenue and operating profit representing more than half of our full year estimate. With around three-quarters of revenue earned overseas, GAW is a beneficiary of sterling’s weakness, notably versus the US dollar, which alone, we estimate, contributed c 6% to GAW’s core revenue growth in H123. Although sterling has recently strengthened, at current exchange rates it continues to provide good su...
Games Workshop (GAW) is a global leader in tabletop miniature gaming. Management’s focus on product quality and innovation with greater customer engagement and geographic distribution has delivered impressive growth in profitability and cash returns, with an enviable return on capital (118% in FY22). Our forecasts of continued revenue and profit growth in FY23–24, albeit more muted than recent years due to phasing of new edition launches, lower P/E multiples versus recent highs is attractive in ...
Games Workshop Group’s (GAW’s) trading update for the year ending May 2022 indicates ongoing good demand following the standout performance of the prior year. The lower profitability (profit before tax margin) for FY22 versus FY21 reflects the already-flagged economy-wide inflationary cost pressures and internal investment, offset by a notable improvement in royalties income (£28m versus £16.3m FY21). The royalties income was the highest ever generated by the company, indicating the success it i...
Games Workshop Group’s (GAW’s) Q322 trading update (to the end of February), which indicates that trading is in line with expectations, is reassuring given the incremental cost pressures (including freight) highlighted in the H122 results. We believe the company’s cash position is better than we expected given the declaration of a further dividend (70p/share), taking the cumulative (financial) year to date total to 235p/share. We make no changes to our forecasts beyond increasing our FY22 divide...

Games Workshop Group’s (GAW’s) H122 results reflect lower year-on-year revenue growth after a very strong FY21, as expected, with positive comments on new launches, specifically the third edition of Age of Sigmar. Ongoing internal investment to support future growth and new external cost pressures led to a reduction in operating profit pre-royalties, which was more than offset by the notable increase in royalty income. As previously flagged, the shape of our FY22 forecasts has changed to reflect...
