VMS’ 1Q25 earnings of S$56m (-7% yoy) missed our expectations, forming only 22% of our full-year estimate. Revenue fell 8% yoy due to lower demand in the Lifestyle Consumer technology domain, where VMS improved the reliability for a customer’s key products. As a result, we recommend stocks that will be the least impacted and could potentially still deliver earnings growth for 2025. Our top picks are Frencken (which has manufacturing bases locally and strong orders from ASML), UMS (which is ramping up for its new customer) and Valuetronics (which will see contribution from new customers and its new GPU leasing business). The selloff driven by the US’ unprecedented and perplexing tariff plans has liberated many investors of profits this year. Given the fluidity of market conditions, we highlight a number of domestic-focused stocks such as CENT, CD, DFI, HLA, PANU, PROP, RFMD, SSG and SIE as well as Singapore-focused REITS such as CDLHT, FEHT, FCT, KREIT, LREIT and PREIT. In addition, the MAS’ equity market review should inject much needed liquidity in 2H25. We lower our STI target to 3,720 (previously 4,115).
Driven by our small-mid cap picks, our Alpha Picks portfolio outperformed in Mar 25, increasing 3.4% mom on an equal-weighted basis and beating the STI by 1.4ppt. For 1Q25, our portfolio did not do as well as it underperformed the STI by 5.1ppt on an equal-weighted basis, due largely to the banking sector which reported strong 2024 results.

VMS’ 2024 earnings of S$245m (-9% yoy) are in line with our expectation, forming 100% of our full-year estimate. The weaker earnings were due to softer demand as customers across most of the domains turned cautious ahead of the US election and increasing geopolitical uncertainties. VMS expects the short-term business environment to be uncertain but it still targets growth in 2025. Downgrade to HOLD with a 14% lower target price of S$13.35.
While sounding a word of caution for medium-term government revenues, Prime Minister Wong delivered a budget that continued to defray the pain of inflation with an eye toward clean energy, climate change and helping lower-income households. No new equities market proposals were announced, which may disappoint investors in the short term. Our top picks are BAL, CD, KEP, OCBC, STE, STM, SCI, ST, VMS and YZJSGD.

Despite posting a solid 1.2% mom increase for Jan 25, our Alpha Picks portfolio underperformed the STI by 0.6ppt on an equal-weighted basis as, again, the index performance was driven up by the banks. However, our Alpha Picks portfolio performed better on a market cap-weighted basis, increasing 2.1% mom and beating the STI by 0.3ppt. Our Alpha Picks portfolio has now outperformed the STI in 12 out of the past 15 months.
