The Netherlands: Pro-European Election Results
After the co llapse of the Dutch government less than a year after its formation, snap elections took place this week (October 28). Today, with 99.7% of collected votes, the results suggest that the support from the far-right party PVV to a coalition government will not be necessary anymore. At the same time, t he rise of D66, a pro-European party, suggests a potential increase in support for European integration within the Dutch government. We think that this is a turning point in the Dutch political landscape, which could be good news for discussions at the EU level. In particular, the leader of the D66 party, Rob Jetten , could enhance backing for initiatives related to housing, green energy, and healthcare. However, we remain prudent as, w hile there is support for increasing defence spending and solidarity with Ukraine, the focus of Dutch politics may remain on domestic issues. This inward orientation could limit the Netherlands' involvement in key European discussions, especially with municipal elections approaching in 2026, when parties may be less willing to compromise.
