NTT DATA has been hosting open innovation contests twice a year since 2014. The last global Contest hosted regional semifinals in nine countries to further emphasize the global aspect of the event, and received more than 400 proposals from across the world. The Grand Finale winner, Barcelona-based Social Coin, has already undergone intensive business development. In addition to the Grand Finale winner, NTT DATA is engaging with six other finalists to discuss potentials for co-creating innovative businesses.

As a result of last year’s success, NTT DATA expanded this contest to 15 cities. Any startup company can submit a proposal in fields such as FinTech, InsurTech, HealthcareTech, Financial Inclusion, RegTech, IoT, digital marketing, Blockchain, virtual currency, API, personal data, AI, drone, digital archive, BPM, energy or quantum computing.

“The last Contest was a really strong engine to meet 10 unparalleled startups from across the world and begin helping seven of them with business development,” said Kotaro Zamma, Head of Open Innovation and Business Incubation at NTT DATA. “We look forward to continuing this project and expanding to 15 cities to provide more edge-cutting technologies and startups an opportunity to speed up business development in hopes of surpassing 10 billion JPY (approximately $100 million USD) in annual business by 2020.”

NTT's 3Q results largely improved. Key points to note is the continued recovery in ARPU in mobile, and continued revenue recovery in the Global Solutions and Regional business. However, mobile marketing spend has dented profitability again, with management revising guidance for full year 2025 across the board downwards. We continue to be Buyers but prefer KDDI and SB (our top pick among the 3 Japanese incumbents).

NTT printed a rather soft set of Q1 results as Mobile was weaker and Global Solutions was impacted by FX weakness in its Overseas arm. The recovery in Regional Communications offered some encouragement and is likely to remain so as the firm transits from Copper to Fibre over the long run.
