The Income Imperative | Strategic themes for real returns

With interest rates on a downward trajectory and the amount that can be saved in a cash ISA widely expected to be cut in next week's Budget, investors in search of income may need to widen their net in order to achieve meaningful returns. The investment trust universe offers many income- orientated strategies, whether focusing on equities at home or abroad, or alternative assets such as property and infrastructure. In this note we will explore some less traditional approaches to income generation, looking at how differentiated strategies can make best use of the closed-ended structure to generate real returns with the potential to grow capital as well as income.
