Greek Equity Strategy – 2023 outlook | Clear and rewarding destination, uneven journey

2022: The comeback – Greek equities staged an impressive comeback in 2022, outpacing most international markets with a 7% total return vs a 2-digit drop suffered by other European indices (and the S&P in EUR terms). Underpinning the ASE was certainly the better macroeconomic backdrop, with the Greek economy expanding by >5% in 2022 compared with c3% for the EU. Light positioning, healthy corporate profitability and more attractive yield gaps than in other regions were additional supporting factors, as was the low starting base following the significant underperformance of the Greek market in 2021.

2023: More ways to win, fewer ways to lose – 2023 has started on the front foot (ASE +10% ytd) with investors entertaining the idea of a better-than-feared macro landscape in Europe in the light of retreating gas prices. Greece has also benefited from the continuing rotation to value, as indicated by the outperformance of the banking sector (GR banks more than +20% ytd), with domestic financials also underpinned by their higher sensitivity to rising rates than EU peers. The earnings growth profile of Greek equities looks attractive (banks core PPI c20% in 2023e, non-financials EBITDA +5%) with relatively limited downside risk against the background of a 1-2% GDP growth. Valuations also remain compelling, with non financials (c5.5x EV EBITDA) and banks (c0.6x P/BV) representing good value vs EU/periphery peers (c20-30% discount).

… but it feels as if investors are jumping the gun in fading political risk – The re-pricing of Greek assets from their recent trough is both a relative and an absolute trade in view of the well-telegraphed anticipated return of the country to Investment Grade status in 2023, however we feel the market may have been too complacent too soon in fading political risk. The upcoming elections in Q2’23 (April-May most likely) look poised to include 2 election rounds (assuming the first one results in a hung Parliament) and a somewhat more perplexed path to the formation of a govt, in the light of the increasingly polarized landscape. Our baseline remains that of a coalition between the 2 mainstream parties, but the path to that looks far from linear.

How to position – Overall, although we believe the asymmetry of risks is positive for Greek equities in calendar 2023 (and in the medium-term), we feel the picture is a bit more nuanced in the short-term, after the ytd rally. The downside risks look moderate given the resilient earnings profile for Greek equities, but we argue that the near-term upside is somewhat capped by the political developments. We continue to advocate for a portfolio with stocks with solid operating momentum and visible dividend yields (Mytilineos, Jumbo, OPAP) supplemented by Alpha Bank (attractive risk-reward given depressed valuation).

What if? With investors recently starting to see the glass half full on the war in Ukraine, the obvious question is the price action that would follow in case of a resolution in the conflict. Although our view is that investors should remain relatively defensively positioned until the elections, for market participants keen to tilt toward a riskier stance in anticipation of a shift in geopolitics we recommend PPC (beneficiary of falling gas prices), Fourlis (large valuation dislocation, with the OpCo being offered as free option) and Piraeus Bank (highest-beta play on positive macro).
