Allstate has a solid market position but limited growth prospects.
Allstate delivered strong first-quarter results that suggest the company is making material progress in putting its recent underwriting issues in the rearview mirror. While it appears to have come at the cost of a decline in policies in force, the company’s combined ratio improved to 93.6% from 98.4% last year. This resulted in a fairly attractive annualized return on equity of 11.6%. The company's segments include: Allstate Protection, which provides private passenger auto, homeowners, other personal lines and commercial insurance; Service Businesses, which includes SquareTrade that provides consumer protection plans and related technical support; Allstate Life, which provides interest-sensitive and variable life insurance products, as well as distributes non-proprietary retirement products; and Allstate Benefits, which provides voluntary benefits products, including life, accident, critical illness, and other health insurance products.
