U.S. cigarette volume will decline over the long run, but Altria still holds a wide moat.

Wide-moat Altria's third-quarter results support our view that, in a declining industry, the company will struggle to grow revenue in its cigarette business, which makes up roughly 80% of total company revenue. For the quarter, Altria grew smokeable revenue 2.7% on roughly flat volume (volume was down 3% when adjusted for inventory builds), which is in line with our 2016 revenue forecast.
