Morningstar | Barrick Gold President Dushnisky Leaving to Become AngloGold Ashanti CEO; No Change to FVEs

On July 23, Barrick Gold and AngloGold Ashanti announced that Kelvin Dushnisky would leave his current role as president and board member at Barrick on Aug. 31 to assume the role as CEO and board member at AngloGold Ashanti. Dushnisky replaces current AngloGold CEO Srinivasan Venkatakrishnan, whose departure was announced in April and is set to leave the company at the end of August. Barrick will now begin a search for Dushnisky’s replacement. The changes in leadership do not impact our forecasts, and as a result, we are maintaining Barrick’s fair value estimates of USD 14 per share and CAD 18 per share and AngloGold Ashanti’s fair value estimates of USD 10 per ADR and ZAR 126 per share. Both companies’ no-moat ratings are unchanged.

Mr. Dushnisky has been with Barrick since 2002, having served across several leadership positions, including as one of the company’s two co-presidents since 2015 after chairman John Thornton took charge of the company. We were a bit surprised by Dushnisky’s departure given his long tenure with Barrick and his current position as president. However, we’ve noted that Dushnisky’s role at Barrick did not have the CEO title and that the company's strategy appeared to be part of Thornton’s responsibilities. At AngloGold Ashanti, Dushnisky will be CEO, likely encompassing greater responsibilities than his current role. Although Dushnisky was a key part of Barrick’s turnaround, his departure does not impact our standard stewardship rating, as Thornton remains as chairman and we believe a suitable replacement will be found.

We think AngloGold Ashanti has made a great hire in Dushnisky but maintain our standard stewardship rating as we await the direction in which he takes the company. Given Dushnisky’s part in Barrick’s turnaround, we think he has the potential to help AngloGold Ashanti execute its own turnaround with its higher-cost, Africa-heavy portfolio.
