General Mills seeks to offset souring volume trends by milking cost savings to fuel brand spend.

Tepid sales continued to dog narrow-moat General Mills in its fiscal second quarter, with organic sales down 4%. This shortfall was particularly pronounced in the firm's U.S. retail segment (60% of total sales), which chalked up a 6% top-line erosion reflecting a 10% reduction in underlying segment volume (concentrated in soup, refrigerated dough, and yogurt).
