Markel’s Underwriting Performance Slips in 3Q
Markel saw deterioration in underwriting results in the third quarter, but good results on the investment side acted as an offset. Through the first nine months of the year, book value per share has grown at a 9% rate, which is a solid result, in our view. However, we continue to believe the company’s recent performance has been aided by unsustainable tailwinds, and we are skeptical that the environment will remain as favorable going forward.
