Qualcomm Remains Shrouded in Uncertainty With Unfavorable Ruling; Negative Moat Trend Validated

On May 22, The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh ruled that Qualcomm unlawfully suppressed competition in the market for smartphone chips (particularly baseband processors) and used its dominant position to extract excessive licensing fees. The antitrust lawsuit was brought against Qualcomm in January 2017 by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. We note this ruling comes roughly one month after the firm reached a settlement with Apple in a dispute with similar concerns...
