Valero Energy reported third-quarter adjusted earnings of $841 million compared with $571 million last year as strong utilization in the face of hurricane activity allowed it to capitalize on the wider margins and crude spreads during the quarter. Despite disruptions to five refineries from Hurricane Harvey, Valero still managed utilization of 92% during the quarter, boosting refining operating income to $1.4 billion from $934 million last year.
