Can economic dirigisme be averted?

France and other European countries seem to be heading towards economic dirigisme. For example: Regarding the climate, myriad regulations, bans and sector-specific taxes are being proposed instead of using an economywide market mechanism in the form of a sufficiently high CO 2 price; Government policies to support companies (tax cuts, sectoral subsidies, loan guarantees) are met with calls for explicit pre conditions instead of adopting an “ordoliberal” approach of establishing a conducive economic environment, trusting companies and assessing economic policies ex post ; Governments are developing industrial policies where they pick the technologies and products whose development they want to assist instead of adopting a bottom-up approach where companies invite the government to cofinance the development of some innovations; There are more and more p roposals to introduce administered prices (rents, medicines, energy, etc.).
