China’s two transitions
Two transitions are currently under way in China: One transition to lower growth, due to population ageing; Another transition to a polarised economy: services and the new-technology sector are growing; “old†industries are contracting. The second transition may accelerate the first, as productivity gains are usually lower in a services (and construction) economy. Trying to keep growth above 6% through this double transition is doomed to fail.
