Could the Italian crisis become a euro zone-wide crisis?

The Italian crisis has features that are very specific to Italy: an expansionary fiscal policy that will not solve Italy’s structural problems, stagnant productivity and very low long-term growth. Could this Italy- specific crisis become a euro zone-wide crisis? What possible contagion mechanisms would spread the crisis from Italy to the rest of the euro zone and are these mechanisms already at work? They could include: Contagion between risk premia on government bonds in the event of capital outflows from the euro zone as a whole or a rise in risk aversion; Contagion between banks, which could then spread to companies; The effect of Italy’s weak growth on growth in the other euro-zone countries. Unfortunately, all these contagion mechanisms are now at work.
