Could there be a serious crisis in China?

Growth is clearly slow ing down in China, and very probably far more than shown by GDP growth figures . Beyond a slowdown in growth, the causes of which we will examine, could there be a serious crisis in China? We do not believe so: An excessive debt crisis or a banking crisis is unlikely given the very low interest rates and the government’s very considerable capacity to recapitalise banks thanks to the huge savings of the Chinese; A growth crisis (recession) is also unlikely since the government could run up a very large fiscal deficit, and since it is possible to lower interest rates further thanks to the controls on capital outflows.
