Donald Trump: A reaction to globalisation or to domestic developments in the United States?
Donald Trump's election showed the poor situation of a large proportion of the US population, revealed by rising inequality, poverty and a falling employment rate. But is this deterioration in the situation of many Americans due to: Globalisation, as Trump contends, because of competition from emerging countries, offshoring, and downward pressure on wages? Or, developments specific to the United States: distortion of income distribution, very high required return on equity, low level of welfare benefits and redistributive policies? It is clear that globalisation is a scapegoat, and that the real causes of the deterioration in Americans ’ situation are domestic.
