Energy transition: There is no point trying to outdo the 2°C scenario under the Paris agreement
The International Energy Agency has published a long-term scenario of the energy mix consistent with a 2°C rise in the world’s temperature at the end of the century. This scenario is already very difficult to meet, current global CO 2 emissions are not at all compatible with it and there is insufficient investment in renewable energy. But it is pointless to try to outdo this scenario. In particular, under this scenario, coal must rapidly be replaced by natural gas in electricity production. The demand sometimes made for a very rapid end to the financing of all fossil fuels therefore makes no sense, since, over a long period of time, natural gas production will have to be increased .
