Euro zone, France: Is there a case for a tax hike?

There are frequent calls to increase household taxes ( in particular those paid by the “rich”) due to the COVID crisis. But what would justify a hike in household taxes (on the “rich”)? Not the need to finance fiscal deficits, which are fully monetised by the ECB; For some, solidarity with those in difficulty (workers who have lost their job, young people, struggling small business owners). But what would a tax hike do for struggling French people, given the lack of any limit to public spending? It would reduce demand and employment . As long as fiscal deficits can be financed without difficulty with the help of the ECB, there is no economic justification for a tax hike on “rich” households. This situation may change if a fiscal constraint resurfaced in the future .
