France: How can the situation of the working class be improved?

The difficulties of the working class in France are well known: High low-skilled unemployment rate; Low social mobility, which is due to the failures of the education system and the disappearance of intermediate jobs; Low productivity gains, leading to limited potential upside for real wages. What can the government do to improve the situation of the working class? Increasing real wages faster than labour productivity eventually leads to a deterioration in employees’ situation , due to the loss of cost-competitiveness and profitability; Using the fiscal deficit to finance an increase in government transfer payments cannot be a sustainable strategy in the medium term; It would be difficult to restore industry in France in an environment of very strong cost and tax competition; Falling interest rates and easy borrowing rapidly lead to excessive debt; moreover, since interest rates are low, the working class receives a low return on its savings. So what solutions remain? An improvement in skills ; it may make it possible to: Maintain manufacturing employment; Restore productivity gains; Reduce low-skilled unemployment; Improve the level of sophistication of service jobs.
