France: What economic mechanisms and questions require a stance before an economic policy agenda can be formed?
Economists diverge on a number of economic questions . So a stance must be taken when it comes to certain mechanisms or questions in order to build a serious economic policy agenda (we focus on the case of France). This is necessary for this agenda to be transparent , credible and based on clear assumptions. T he questions on which a stance must be taken in order to form a credible agenda come to mind: Can low wages be increased without destroying low-skilled employment? Which taxes are certain to have a negative effect on investment and employment? Is France’s deindustrialisation, low employment rate and external deficit the result of excessive labour costs, or other factors? If so, which ones? Are corporate profit margins and the level of shareholder remuneration excessive or otherwise? Can wealth inequality be reduced without affecting the dynamism of the economy? Will the energy transition lead to markedly higher energy prices and, absent corrective measures, to a sharp rise in inequality? Will consumption have to fall to enable the increase in investment? Should the excessive rise in real estate prices be corrected through assistance to households, by controlling real estate prices or through additional housing construction ? Are the difficulties faced by young people (high unemployment, large number of young people not in education or employment) due solely to an underperforming education system or also to economic problems (high youth poverty, high real estate prices, etc.)?
