Global potential growth and climate constraints

We calculate the most likely trajectory of global potential growth and seek to ascertain whether its expected slowdown will be enough to get global CO 2 emissions down to a path compatible with the climate commitments. Given current technological developments and the foreseeable trend in potential growth, we find that global CO 2 emissions are likely to increase by 1.2% per year from 2018 to 2040, whereas they need to decrease by around 2% per year. This suggests that the expected slowdown in global growth will by no means be sufficient to reduce CO 2 emissions to the required level.
