Looking at growth in the real per capita wage in France, which has outpaced that in labour productivity, one gets the impression that French wage earners have benefited from a decent increase in purchasing power. But two factors that have reduce d purchasing power must be taken into account : The rise in the relative price of energy; The rise in the cost of housing, whether rented or purchased. The effect of these cost rises has reduced the purchasing power gains of the French by 22% since 1998.
