Inflation still at the centre of decisions
For the first time in 20 years, New Zealand and Canada’s central banks raised their respective policy rates by 50bp. Countering inflation was the battle cry. Inflation and growth, it’s all the same dilemma for the ECB, which nevertheless made no major announcements on Thursday, essentially confirming the end of net purchases for the third quarter and the flexibility of its monetary tightening trajectory. The coming week will be marked in particular by the presidential debate between the two rounds in France, Chinese GDP figures, the Minutes of the Reserve Bank of Australia, inflation in Canada and euro zone PMIs.
