Lessons from Germany’s reforms in the early 2000s for France’s current reforms

Our first question is whether France’s current situation is more or less serious than that of Germany in the late 1990s. We find that France currently faces a similar situation to that faced by Germany 20 years ago. Our second question is how much time it took for Germany’s reforms to lead to improvements in: E mployment and unemployment rates; Productivity; Foreign trade , thanks to the improve ment in cost competitiveness; Investment , thanks to the improvement in profitability. T his all suggests that the reforms implemented in France in 2018 can be expected to have a positive effect on the French economy in 2021-2022.
